Lunar Interlude 5
![]()
![]() 1. FROM THERE TO HERE AND THERE IS GONE![]() A. YOUR ARRIVAL For those of you who were just casually (or not so casually) pulled between the universes, depending on how you viewed your home world, your day just got a whole lot worse. You can't really remember what happened, but the grass beneath you is plush and comfortable, and out in the well manicured field of trees you're sitting in are ... well, a fairly sizeable crowd of people. The Director has pulled in new Reclaimers so often by this point that it's become something of an event. And quite frankly, according to the murmurs of other members of the Bureau, she's become pretty adept at picking some real weirdos. The Director, standing before you dressed in regal robes, clears her throat and begins to speak. She doesn't appear to be wearing any mics, but her voice is somehow amplified so that it booms through the Quad, and onto the Bracers of those who aren't in the Quad. When she's done, there's silence. In the distance, trains. No, really, you most definitely heard the sound of a train just now. That's probably normal. In any case, you have a few minutes to gather your bearings before you're taken to your initiation. You can talk with other newbies who are sitting there with you, or if you happen to spot somebody you know among the crowd watching, now's your chance to reunite with them. And maybe one of those people out there will be able to relay a fact to you, even if you can't remember exactly how: Your world, and the people who were there and are not here, are now gone. ![]() Once you have your bearings, you are divided into small groups of three or four and brought to the easternmost geodesic dome, to an elevator in a well maintained, but sparsely landscaped field. There's nothing particularly ominous feeling about the space — in fact, the two guards who greet you at the elevator entrance seem pleased with your arrival. You are, after all, one of the few chosen by the Director, the few who will reclaim what the Hunger has destroyed. And in a few moments, you're about to find that out for yourself. After a tightly packed elevator ride, your group is ushered out to a rather grand looking hall, banners of the Bureau of Balance adorn both sides of smooth metal walls. And inside the Voidfish's chamber stands a tank — impossibly tall, and soaked in a black ink that obscures whatever the tank may be holding. Standing by the tank is a bard, who happens to be reciting the lyrics to a song. Considering what he's about to do with the sheets of paper in his hands, the lyrics might be apt enough. When he's finished, he takes the sheets of paper — sheet music — opens a drawer at the bottom of the tank, drops the papers in, and shuts it. And swiftly, you feel as if there's something you can't just shake off about the melody you just heard. If you seem alarmed, the bard takes notice of it. "Yeah, man, like... don't think too hard about it, it's like that every time. I'm guessing you're here to be inoculated? Just a heads up, you might want to, like, seriously, hold your nose while you drink it down. It tastes wicked gross, man." You sort of get the sense that he's said this speech once or twice in the past. It's well rehearsed, much like the stories you'd expect a bard to be able to recite. "Anyway, I'm supposed to tell you that you have a choice. If you drink the black stuff, you'll be able to hear through the, uh... Huh, how do I describe it? Through the [TSHCSCHTSHCHSC] sound. You guys like, hear that? Anyway, it's all about knowledge or something. I don't know, I'm just here to, like, feed the thing. We call it the [TSCHHSCHSCH], by the way. So, like. You get a choice. You can drink it and understand stuff, or not drink it and then hear that crackling noise all day every day. If I were you, I'd drink it. But, hey man, I'm not like, your dad or anything." The bard takes five cups and draws liquid from a spigot connected directly to the basin of the large tank. Stormy, muddy looking ichor is drawn into them, one by one. He offers each of you a sip. Drink it (he wasn't kidding about what it tasted like), and you're inoculated to the wisdom of the Voidfish. You try to remember the song this bard sang a few moments ago and the melody, the meter, every octave, all come back to you. And if you think back to your arrival, some of the things you may have heard other people in the Quad say, that simply sounded like static, are suddenly clear. Bureau of Balance. Grand Relic. Reclaimers. Yet you still can't remember the Hunger or what it had done to your world. And as you look back to the tank in front of you, the water has become clear. There's a jellyfish, as tall as a building, floating within. You look into the body of the creature and you can almost make out a beautiful, tiny universe floating within it. 2. TEST OF INITIATIONYou are immediately divided into pairs and brought to the Arena, a large building that is capable of running several simulations for combat training, events, or, in this case, your Test of Initiation. When you and your partner walk into the Arena, the simulators switch to Initiation Mode, the scenery shifts, and your test begins. The experience is wildly different for each group — that's because the test will be drawing from both of your experiences back home. Initiation Mode replicates an amalgam of thoughts, metaphors, and ideas between the two people who signed up in order to make an obstacle course suited to appropriately test their ability to stay focused. This is a good opportunity to introduce new CR to some of the thoughts and feelings that your character has going on through their mind, their preferences, or give away a piece of information about themselves that might not be on the surface level. For example, let's say that your character was born on a ship, and spent their entire childhood growing up at sea. Your partner's life involves a lifetime of academic research (setting aside our dearth of smart archetypes for a sec here). An amalgamation suited for the Test of Initiation may involve navigating a ship through choppy seas with flying book monsters that breathe fire. Be as creative as you want! The design is 100% left up to you. All tests will eventually lead toward a room with a relic locked within it. What that looks like is up also up to you! If you need a few ideas, though, it could be: A bright red pair of gloves that can manipulate matter, or a ball of yarn that can roll up pretty much anything. Regardless of what the relic looks like, all you have to do to pass is retrieve the relic without using it. 3. AROUND THE MOON BASEThe Director's sudden absence isn't particularly anything new, given she spent the majority of her time on Lyrabar, leaving the Moon Base to manage itself. It is the first time Lucas has been left entirely in charge of it though. Controlled chaos becomes something of a much less controlled chaos. The sound of trains in the distance, though nobody can seem to pinpoint where they're coming from, isn't helping. Though, that isn't necessarily Lucas' fault It's largely the fault of a technomancer supposedly stuck on a different plane and infecting the Moon Base's tech. She's figured out where the Director went, and she's going to be using the next two weeks to her advantage. It's hard to say what her motives are here. But then, Miss Zarves has always been a little bit inexplicable. ![]() Oh man, Miss Zarves has been wanting to try this thing she wrote for ages, and for a few weeks at least, she's figured out how to override the Director's simulation settings. Did you know the Moon Base has an arcade? You're about to find out if not: If you happen to wander into the Arena, you'll find yourself inexplicably trapped in a simulation based off of an arcade game — and no, you're not going to get out until you win. As a note, you can't die in these simulations, but you can be busted up a bit. You can repeatedly get game overs until you win. You can run with any game on the conveniently copyright infringement free list linked above however you like, but here are a few settings to get you started: ○ Mesozoic Park: The Lost Chult. You and a friend find yourselves in a lush jungle, with no clear path to the escape helicopter. Using your wits and path actions, you are going to need to clear one for yourselves. Again, these are just a few examples! Feel free to use any of the games listed as you see fit. E. THERE'S NO ESCAPE The town, though it might not rely as heavily on Moon Base tech as the rest of the Bureau does, isn't exactly escaping unscathed either. It's more like, Miss Zarves find you Reclaimers a lot more entertaining than a bunch of shopkeepers who have had to put up with a deals warlock's shenanigans long enough that it's hard to surprise them. That said, if shopping or the occasional dining is on your agenda in town, then you'll find that you'll be able to do so largely unhindered. Shopping at Fantasy Costco is normal, too, if Garfield being himself falls under your usual definition of normal. There is one exception, though: It's a small alleyway that leads to the back entrance of Madame Frione's Tea Kettle. Step into it, and weirdly, you'll find that something unseen is blocking your exit. And then, a message appears on your bracer. From: Zarves♥Scarves You won't get a response from Miss Zarves, but you will find that you won't be able to leave until you respond to her text with something. And you'll also find that whatever you answer? It's automatically sent to the entire network. FYI: If you lie in your response, whatever's blocking you in will suddenly give way — you'll be able to move about three feet before there's suddenly another one blocking your escape. Unfortunately, it looks like if you want to escape this, you're going to have to be honest with yourself. And the network, as it were! E. LET'S JUST ESCAPE There is a very easy way to avoid anything a technomancer tries to do to mess with you, of course: Avoid the tech she's using to mess with you. And after the sort of messed up mission that Lyrabar was, and after the sort of screwed up ordeal that is being initiated into the Bureau to begin with, some of you will probably want to just chill out for a bit, too. Here are a few suggestions! ○ Another small art studio with a supply of magic paintbrushes has been set up in the Academy. Previously, the paintbrushes had painted in a color that represented the energy you're giving off. Nowadays, it's a bit more versatile: You can now change the color you're painting with by simply thinking about it. |

[She crosses her arms and frowns. It was probably sheet music, if Johann is up to his usual methods. Which... well, from the times she's spoken to him, he seems rather set in his ways. Even her handwritten "please don't feed me music! :(" sign she'd left on the voidfish tank hadn't stopped him!
But wait. Shuichi, not noticing something? Well, she guesses that does make sense. It feels like forever ago that she first arrived, but she can't say she was thinking her clearest back then, after leaving the killing game behind.]
W-Well, that's not really important... I'm just really happy to see you again! I-
[Her throat closes up, and she can't bring herself to say that she never thought she'd see him again. After everything she'd seen here, it was so hard to keep believing that she really would be able to see everyone again, even after they won. She'd take his hands if he weren't holding Yacchi, but instead she just clasps them behind her back, closes her eyes, and gives him a genuine smile.]
I-I'm sure you have a lot of questions, huh? And I have stuff I want to ask you, too!
no subject
[So he once again finds it a little hard to talk, and just nods his head. He has...so many questions, actually. Now that he knows things aren't as hopeless as he'd initially thought, his sense of curiosity has been coming back. And there are just so many things right now that he doesn't understand.]
M-mm, yeah I-- [He's interrupted once again, though this time by his stomach rather than Yacchi. It gives a soft, irritated little grumble that causes Shuichi to clutch the plush whale even closer as his cheeks light up.] d-do...do have a lot of questions.
[Kaede, please pretend that didn't just happen. Please just continue to conversation as per usual, as he is attempting to do. This is more than enough embarrassment for him.]
no subject
How about we go get some tea? I can introduce you to Bender. You can ask him to make anything you want! He doesn't always work right, but you can try...
[She does take a moment to glance around the courtyard one more time. She doesn't see anyone else from home nearby. But... if Shuichi's here, couldn't that mean...?]
Umm... are the others with you, Saihara-kun?
no subject
Oh! Yes! Oma-kun is here as well, we were paired together for our test. I'm not exactly sure where he went, though...
no subject
[Her tone is a little reproachful. That does seem like something Kokichi would do, stealing Shuichi's hat and coat. But she can't hold that tone, the pout breaking into a relieved smile as she presses her hand to her heart. It's not everyone, but... at least there are two of her friends here.]
I'm sure he'll be okay! I'll try to find him later. For now, let's get you something to eat!
[She hums to herself before deciding which way she wants to go. Yeah, they could go anywhere in town, but it's probably best to introduce Shuichi to Bender sooner rather than have him stumble across him on his own.]
no subject
[He was being a gentleman!]
no subject
[Well, that answers the jacket, but what about his hat...? Kokichi doesn't strike her as the type to wear ballcaps to avoid people's eyes.
As they walk, she glances sideways to him. She's no cleric, but he doesn't look injured. Is he in any pain, like she was when she first arrived? Her left hand absently starts to move toward her neck, but she stifles the gesture and instead clasps her hands behind her back again.
She does know one thing for certain, and it's that she doesn't really want to talk about the killing game while they're still relatively in the open. So after a moment, she adds,]
I know you just got here, but... later, I'll have to introduce you to all of my friends! You'll really like all of them, I'm sure of it. Everyone here is really nice-
[A beat as she thinks of Bakugo, then thinks of Komaeda, and amends her statement to,] Well... some of them are kind of weird! But they're good people at heart, I know it!
no subject
[But other than that, totally fine! Nothing that would suggest he's experiencing phantom death pains.]
Heh...you really have been here for a while then, haven't you... [It's a question, but not really. Naturally, he noticed the subtle differences to her height and build when she hugged him earlier and he realized what that might mean. But if she has friends here and knows (or suspects) that "everyone here is really nice", it's obvious that she didn't just get here. Not even Kaede's never-ending optimism and upbeat attitude could make her say that with such confidence after only a few hours.] I'd like that though, later on. Not today...I kind of just want to go to sleep after this.
["This" being food and catching up with Kaede.]
no subject
[She glances sideways to him again with a sad smile. Maybe with the time span in mind, he can understand why she was so excited to see him, why she hugged him immediately. Maybe he can understand, too, why she hadn't recognized him immediately.]
But... yeah. I remember what it was like... showing up here. I just wanted to go right to sleep, too! It's a lot to try to take in all at once. I was lucky that I met some good people right away who were able to help me out. We were all really confused... we were the first batch of Reclaimers the Director had rescued, after all! But we were able to work together.
So... whatever questions you have about this, I'm here for you, night or day!
[She pumps her fists, trying to elicit a smile from Shuichi.]
no subject
Mmm, thank you, Akamatsu-san.
[He's sure he will have plenty of questions beyond the ones he's about to ask whenever they reach the cafe.]
no subject
[When they finally get to the café, Kaede enters and holds the door open behind her for Shuichi to follow her in.]
C'mon, you can place your order on these little tablets... What's your favorite food, Saihara-kun? Bender really does try his best...
[Even she sounds doubtful when she says that. Sure, Bender tries his best, but the results are, well... hm. How well he's adhered to the original thing is really up for interpretation.]
no subject
It...doesn't have to be anything special, really. I'd be fine with just toast...just something simple.
no subject
[She pages through the options on the tablet. Some of them are pretty normal, some of them are... definitely not. "Gelato that makes you hot or not," for example.]
How about just a regular sandwich? He doesn't usually mess up his normal menu.
[She just starts keying it in for him. That part at least, the plain American deli fare of soups and sandwiches, he has hardwired in not to mess up.]
no subject
[So, charcoal bread, got it. He's making a note to avoid toast.]
A sandwich is fine. [He just needs something edible okay, so the safer the menu, the better.] So I just...use this tablet and--
[Veggie sandwich and magic tea, is what he would like to order please, Bender-san!]
no subject
Kaede orders tea, too, and with two orders of tea, Bender pauses for a moment before giving her both cups. One person gets sandwich, one person gets tea. That's how serving works, he's pretty sure? Kaede just takes them with a laugh.]
Thank you! [and leads Shuichi back to a corner table. It's a little strange how she purposefully moves around Shuichi to take the seat that allows her to watch the door, her back to the wall so no one can sneak up on them; that's definitely Qrow's and Blake's training at work. She's practically bursting with questions, but doesn't even know where to start, so she just takes a sip from her tea and settles into her seat.]
Umm... it's okay to talk and eat at the same time, right? I don't mind if it's rude! I just... have a lot of stuff I want to talk to you about.
no subject
Ah, no it's fine, I can do both. I have a lot of questions too, so...
[He will not talk with his mouth full though, so there will probably be times where she has to wait a few seconds longer than normal for an answer. He's very hungry, okay?]
no subject
[She desperately wants to know what's happened in the killing game, if it had continued after her death, or if Shuichi is, somehow, from the same time as her. The Hunger sweeping through her execution had been absolute; she'd thought everyone else had perished back then. Did the Director reach into the same time to grab both of her friends, or were Shuichi and Kokichi like Minato and Shinjiro, from a whole different time altogether?
But maybe that's less important than anything Shuichi's worried about. They can't go back, after all, and it's important to focus on the now. She gives him an encouraging smile.]
Ah, but if you ask me any hard questions, I might not be able to answer them...
[She'll try! But there are still things she doesn't understand, too.]
no subject
Okay, well, first of all... what are we...uhm, supposed to be doing here, exactly?
[Okay, you can't entirely blame him for this one. Even if he had been paying rapt attention, it's not like they gave the best rundown of this very basic fact in all the various steps of his initiation...]
no subject
[The tension in her shoulders eases; that's an easy one! She sets her teacup down and points toward the sky. Or, well, the ceiling in this case.]
Well, we're supposed to reclaim these so-called "Grand Relics." That's why we're called Reclaimers, you know? Other members of the Bureau are responsible for finding where these magic things are, and then we all get sent in to try to figure out how we're going to get them away from whoever's using them. Apparently if the Director destroys these really powerful items, it'll stop the Hunger from... well, destroying everything.
[Her lips twist uncertainly at that last part. More than once, Kaede has wondered why they couldn't use the Relics themselves to help the people who've been hurt by them. Honestly, she doesn't really understand how destroying a bunch of magic items is supposed to help restore everything to the way it should be in the first place! But she's pretty sure the Director knows what she's doing.
Probably.]
no subject
I see... [He's going to need some more information before he comes to any real decisions. But the "apparently" Kaede used there concerns him a little.] And "the Hunger" is...what, exactly?
no subject
[She rests both hands on the table, palms down, as she tries to think about how to put it in the best terms for him to understand.]
I guess the better question is... how much do you remember? For me and everyone else I talked to, it's hard to remember the exact moment, but no matter what they were doing, we all just remember... terror. Like listening to a song in minor key, the kind of anxiousness that makes your heart pound without really knowing what's going on.
[At first, she'd assumed it was because she was quite literally dying in that very moment. But that wasn't it. Or rather, that wasn't the only reason.]
The Hunger, um, it's eating everything. All different... worlds? Timelines? It sounds really sci-fi, but... I saw it. A few months ago, we saw it in the sky, this big black mass of inky darkness filled with millions and millions and millions of eyes.
[Her hands curl into fists, and she glances to Shuichi to see how he's taking this all in.]
If we stop it... we can save everybody. Not just our friends, but places and worlds we'd never even imagine as being real! So... we're going to stop it, no matter what.
[She squeezes her clenched fists a little more tightly and gives Shuichi what she hopes is an encouraging nod. It's a lot to take in. She knows it's a lot. But she doesn't want to hide the truth from him this time, either.]
no subject
Mmm... I was...inside when that lady reached out to me. So I didn't see anything like that. [Did he feel terror though? He's not completely sure...maybe? It's hard to be certain when everything was just a hazy blur and his mind and body were both trying their damnedest to reject emotion. He frowns slightly, thinking back. Now that she mentions it...yeah. The thing he was feeling at the time was probably terror. Terror that had been dulled by despair to the point that he hadn't completely recognized it for what it was.] But I...do remember feeling scared for no real reason.
So...these "Grand Relics" are...the Hunger's power source, or something like that?
no subject
[Kaede opens her mouth, closes it again, gaze starting to drift away. Her feelings about the Director are mixed; she's convinced the Director is a good person, doing her best in a horrible position, but she can't help thinking that until now, she'd made a mistake in rescuing Kaede from execution. Once, Lucretia had made a point of reassuring Kaede that she was bound to do great things, and no mistakes had been made; it had almost brought her to tears.
But she forces herself to focus back on Shuichi, her lips curving into a fond smile. He's taking it really, really well. Then again, she guesses that should kind of be expected! He's got to be putting his detective's brain to work.]
Um, maybe... I guess that would make sense! I don't know how, though. So far they've just all been really cursed magic artifacts. Let's see...
[She starts ticking them off on her fingers.]
There were the Space Mittens in New Aspen. I'm not sure if you've seen it yet, but that really, really, really big pine tree that looks like it's gonna scrape the moon? That was those. Um, then there was the Architect's Pen in Vista Virs, that could create anything you could imagine.
[She presses her lips tightly together for a moment. The destruction of the Architect's Pen is truly the one she doesn't understand. It could create anything, and in the efforts to retrieve it, the entire city of Vista Virs was destroyed. Couldn't they have just used the Pen to fix the city before destroying it?
But she continues, ticking off her fingers again.]
Then there was that ball of yarn that rolled up the Mines of Phandelver and launched them into space. The continent of Maru! That wasn't even anyone's fault. A stray dog found it and was playing with it and caused that whole mess. Ummm... and then most recently, there was the Soul Blade in Lyrabar. That one was really scary, it could brainwash people into following whoever held the sword. Umm... we recovered all of them except that one. That one got destroyed in Lyrabar itself. I don't know if it makes a difference where it gets destroyed, though...
no subject
I...definitely didn't see any really big pine trees. [He would have remembered something like that.] Hm...do you know for a fact that the Director has destroyed the ones you recovered? Just out of curiosity.
no subject
[She hasn't really studied a lot of astronomy while she's been here. She opens her mouth to give an enthusiastic "yeah!" and then pauses.
Pauses a little longer, her brows knitting together.]
W-Well... she made a big deal out of destroying the mittens. We could go watch her do it, and there was a broadcast to watch later if you couldn't make it. But... I'm not sure if I saw anything like that for the Pen and the Yarn...
