[...oh. Part Wonderland bullshit, part guilt, and part failed Harry Potter narrative, all shaken up into a bullshit cocktail.]
[Well, as long as it's not a Molotov cocktail, he can work with this.]
...I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the Hunger was not the all-consuming spirit you were preparing for.
[He's starting to realize that, even for magical worlds, the Hunger is something of an extradimensional Monty Python Spanish Inquisition.]
[He sighs and takes his helmet off. Common courtesy, right?]
Look, for whatever it's worth, sometimes just being there helps. You don't have to do anything particularly noteworthy - you just have to show up. It's like...have you ever seen those domino chains? It starts off as a bunch of stacked dominoes all in a line, knocking over the first one knocks over the others one after another, and in the end it all turns into this big domino mosaic? The big picture's great, but it doesn't work if any of the dominoes are out of place.
Sometimes, the best thing you can do is just...be a domino. Show up, do the best you can, and hope there's a big picture down the line. Kill a shadow monster and save someone's life. Keep the infirmary shelves stocked so someone else can focus on triage. Or, y'know, save the Director from a pocket dimension hell train so she can come down here later and put up a giant shield. [He shrugs.] You know, the little differences that turn into big ones later on.
[It's funny because saving the Director is actually a big fucking difference. Hopefully that joke lands.]
