He tries with everything he has to get a message out to her. Maya, run! It's screamed again and again in his head like maybe if he just uses his entire being, he can open up a psychic link with her. But she just keeps going and keeps fighting it. He should have known she'd never give up. If she ends up dead because he looked at some crazy, giant worm, then he deserves to stay stuck like this forever.

But then it sounds like the creature is retreating and Maya's voice is addressing him now. He can't feel anything, but he can picture the look on her face and he's pretty sure he's the stupidest man on this or any other planet to get himself stuck in a situation like this. What if there's no way of reversing this? What if everyone will eventually consider him dead, but he's still trapped in this stone body, able to hear everything?

It's at this point that he truly begins to panic, and without a normal body to react to the attack, he's left in his own head with the crippling fear.
