Field Mission 6: A Day in Thay, Part 1
![]()
![]() ![]() Ready or not, rested or not, it's time to get moving, Reclaimers. You've got a very, very long day ahead of you. And another one. And another one. And, you get the joke. Early Friday morning, with the Director there to see them off, the Reclaimers load up into the Bureau's transportation orbs for the sixth time since this whole ordeal began, and make their way to about a mile or two outside of Thay. It's important to try to stick to the story, at least — that you're all visitors from a faraway school, here to spend some time with the students and faculty of Boarbumps. As much as Lucretia would have liked to join you, she can't. None of the other leading members of the Bureau of Balance can. Whoever enters Thay, after all, is entering a bubble, after all. A time trap. Nobody will be able to leave until the Relic, the Lamp of Undoing, is either retrieved or destroyed. Someone needs to be able to continue if you all can't. 1. SEVEN O'CLOCK ALREADYAs we noted in the OOC post, prompts on this log will be a quick few sentences of specific things happening during each hour. It's expected that Reclaimers will be seeing all of these events multiple times! So feel free to play with them as you see fit. If you're not sure if something you want to do would warrant a roll, please ask us in the RNG thread. ![]() ○ The Reclaimers have arrived in Thay, much to the curiosity of the highly intelligent, occasionally highly ... suspicious ... residents. Nevertheless, they recognize you as visiting, esteemed students, and, though perhaps still suspicious, welcome you into their fold. Also, as a note: Every time the relic is used, time is reset to this moment. ![]() ○ Afternoon classes at Boarbumps begin, starting with a lecture on the magical circuits of the common toad. If you happen to sit in on this one, as a visitor from another school, you may be asked to assist in the dissection. You will be heckled by the rest of the class as deemed fit. ![]() ○ The second afternoon class at Boarbumps begins. Are you three or four time loops in and in desperate need of a nap? This class, The History of Boarbumps, is for you. You will be treated to a long and droning lecture about how the students attending during Boarbumps' very first semester banded together to stop a particularly plucky troll. Which you'd think would be an interesting tale. It is not. ![]() ○ The third and final afternoon class at Boarbumps — Fighting with Fire — begins. The professor, known to be slightly more unorthodox in her teaching methods, will recruit any Reclaimer who happens to be there to defend themselves from the students' incoming fireball spells. The potency of the fireballs themselves range from the tickle of a candle, to that one time you ate a ghost pepper, to one particularly fiery spell that might actually hurt you. ![]() ○ There's a slight catastrophe over in the Town Square. That is to say, a giant spider seems to have escaped from Boarbumps and is terrorizing the vendors, to everyone's surprise. Subdue or dispatch it, it's up to you. ![]() ○ Cleanup of whatever damage the spider did is underway. In the meantime, the faculty of Boarbumps and the Hermetic Order of Red Wizards invite the Reclaimers to a small dinner in one of the public meeting rooms at the Red Keep. Every member of the Red Wizards are present, aside from Onerion Wyvernspur and Brian Darling. ![]() ○ No matter where you are in Thay, you'll feel the ground rumble underneath your feet. The residents largely pass it off as an earthquake, but will note that they have become much more frequent lately. ![]() ○ With a sudden loud roar, the ground of the town square suddenly begins to split. People, shops, and everything else begin to drop into the chasm, despite the Red Wizards, and everyone else's, attempts to save them. 2. OOC: A SPECIAL SHOUTOUTYou are welcome to keep track of how your character experiences these time loops as much or as little as you're comfortable with — we'll also be tracking what you all are doing! Our Minato player Kel came up with some extremely snazzy coding if you would like to track how each loop plays out for your character more closely. Thank you, Kel! Of course, this is completely optional. Keep up with as much as you'd like, have fun as you see fit, and we hope you enjoy this mission! |

Eleanor is going to enlist the help of Michael and Chidi in spending a few loops doing Chidi's favorite thing: school stuff! The three of them are going to use Chidi's Academic and INT bonus to scower the library in search of any books that specifically relate to the founding of the school, and any mentions of Red Robes or why red is such a prominent color for the school. It could be a coincidence
but if there's any time to do things that may be fruitless it's in a time loop. Eleanor is also going to try to give them a Bardic Inspiration boost by humming while they work.
They're also going to take to the history class where Eleanor, using her alias Professor Diana Tremaine, and Michael, as Professor Michael Brainman, will attempt to direct the teacher toward a discussion of the subjects they searched the library for using their Bullshitting Powers combined.
Any DC is fine!

Thanks for the permission on the DC's, we'll let you know the results if you'd like (14 & 16) but we made two rolls and they're both successful for the purposes and intents of your inquiry.
First off, a history lesson. Scouring the library, you see that there's a charter describing the foundation of the Boarbumps Academy. While the world was wrought with war and conflict, the city of Thay kept its neutral stance and avoided conflict with the outside world. The most prominent archmages of the time, names that also have become synonymous with the houses of the school- Silverhand, Arunsun, DeVir, and Wyvernspur- banded together under the leadership of an unnamed scholar and decided to shape and reform the minds of wizards from a young age, encouraging them to practice magic safely. Thus, the academy was born, and with it, the town of Thay rose to fame and a little bit of notoriety.
We'd like to think that the request to learn more in the classroom goes pretty much around Eleanor bluffing her way around and attempting to make herself look like she knows what she's talking about, while Chidi fills in the gaps and saves her from being outed as a non-professor at every turn.
The scarlet color that the town of Thay is modeled after is a source of rumor and debate, hinging upon that fine line where myth and story collide. The unnamed benefactor (whom you can figure out who that is by discussing this with other Reclaimers), wore a brilliant cloak of red, and it became tradition that, in honor of his sacrifice and noble intent, the Red Wizards of Thay became the order that they are today.
Sounds fake, but whatever. Historical texts always favor the winners, after all.
Now, these archmages who formed the school took on a sacred tradition of arcane manipulation- as did all the prominent members of the council and famed red wizards after them. Namely, they sacrificed a part of themselves to gain more power. That something has traditionally always been the ability to cast from a school of magic that generally opposed the one they wanted to master. For example, a cleric who desires the powers of evocation would give up the ability to call forth spells from the necromantic school. A wizard who wanted to become strong in abjuration gave up the ability to conjure- so on and so forth.
There's a bit more information available about the Silverhand family than the rest of the founding houses of Boarbumps. The family gave rise to the Seven Sisters. They were, in all, 7 daughters of the Silverhand family. There was a time in the history of Faerun that the Gods were cast out from the Celestial throne and forced to walk the earth, stripped of their powers and their memories. This was referenced to as "The Time of Troubles." Mysta, the goddess of all magic and the arcane, figured out rather quickly what had happened and began to regrow her powers, as was natural for someone so incredibly in tune with how magic works to begin with. Sensing that the equivalent of the Titans to the Greek gods, Ao, would do something like this again, she decided to split some of her essence into mortals so that if she were ever cast out again, they'd come find her to protect the Weave. (The professor will not describe what the Weave is, it's understood that this is basic 101 material and you guys are PhD titled, at least).
The family that Mystra chose was, in fact, the Silverhand clan. 7 daughters were blessed with her light, and thus, granted an incredibly long lifespan and good fortune throughout life. Each of them went on to do great things, but the most widely known of them sits as the Open Lord of Waterdeep, Larael Silverhand. She ousted a corrupt government that saw the previous administration embezzling thousands upon thousands of gold from the city to line his pockets.
While we'll tell you straight out that the latter doesn't have much to do with the mission (the 7 sisters), the son of one of those 7 sisters is currently enrolled in Boarbumps as we speak. One Adriel Fontane, nee, Adiel Silverhand.
