Michael is able to communicate with the Voidfish, kind of. It doesn't really communicate via speech in the same way Michael is used to, nor does it communicate telepathically. Really, the connection Michael and the Voidfish develop is more empathic than verbal in any way, so all the concepts translated from it to him are vague and imprecise.
All of that being said, the most overwhelming sense Michael gets from the Voidfish is one of melancholy and loneliness. It isn't unhappy, precisely — any questions about being mistreated get a large ? of emotion that Michael will quickly learn indicates a negative — but there is something significant missing. A hole in its heart, metaphorically speaking. It doesn't really have a literal heart.
